- Projecto Emanuel – Orphanage, Recife
Pastor Ian Meldrum is the rector of an Episcopalian church in the city of Olinda, a suburb of Recife.  Associated with this church is a ministry to the “children of the street” and orphanages.  The church purchased a farm near the edge of Olinda and has developed an orphanage, Projeto Emanuel, where these children can live and be educated.  We have helped provide some of their dormitories.

- Church of the Living Water, Recife
Pastor Ian’s wife, Simea de Souza Meldrum, brought her youth group to the city’s garbage dump 10-years ago to feed the families who were living and existing from the city’s trash.  From that first exposure there developed a Bible study among the community, and today has become a large family of faith.  Pastor Simea is interested in more than just their spiritual condition – she and her parishioners have also been instrumental in changing the social conditions as well through housing projects, the improvement of work conditions through the development of a work cooperative, and providing health care, etc.  We were honored to be among this people as we constructed a church side by side for the community to worship in.

- Favela Ministry, Recife
Ana Maria Prado, a locally seminary-trained Christian leader, has developed a spiritual and educational center among one of the fevelas (slums).  Through this center, God’s love is reaching out to Brazil’s poor and oppressed by offering skills and education, enabling the people to find better employment.  Side by Side will be providing a worship and educational center this fall.
